Urdu Mehfil takes pleasure in congratulating Aligarh Alumni Association, Houston chapter, on organizing another successful mushaira. Jashn-e-Waseem Barelvi., Mushaira 2009 was held on November 6, at Pakistan Center, and was attended by a large gathering.
The galaxy of stage was studded with star poets including Janab Waseem Barelvi, Janab Meraj Faizabadi, Janab Abbas Tabish, Janab Tahir Faraz, Mohtarma Ishrat Afreen, Janab Zamin Jafri, Janab Sarfaraz Abd, Mohtarma Humera Rehman, Janab Dr. Nausha Asrar, Janab Khalid Khwaja, Mohtarma Dr. Shagufta Riaz and Janab Hammad Hasan. The program began with a melodious 'Naat-e-Rasool' (PBUH) rendered by Janab Mohammad Abid.
On behalf of Aligarh Alumni Association, Janab Abdullah Jafri presneted the 'Ali Sardar Jafri' award of one lakh rupees (Rs.100,0000) along with a shield to Professor Waseem Barelvi for his valuable contribution to modern Urdu literature. Mohtarma Sarah H. Green, Associate Director of Southasian Studies at University of Texas, Austin, presented a $500 award for the two students for their dedication and merits. The Association also presented 'Majaz Award' to two students of HindiUrdu flagship Program of University of Texas, Austin, on their achievements. Max Bruce, who is a master student of the program received the first award. The second award was received by Prof. Syed Akbar Hyder on behalf of Shan Ali Khan, another student who is currently in India for the program.
The audience wholehaertedly applauded all the poets, specially Janab Max Bruce Nadir when he recited his short but meaningful ghazal in the famous tarrannum of Janab Khumar Barabankvi. Janab Max Bruce Nadir is probably the first Caucasian American Urdu poet to learn Urdu through the HindiUrdu Flagship program, travel to India, spent two years in Lucknow, and also ventured into Urdu poetry. The program kept its audience glued to its seat in the late of the night, and ended just before 3.30 am next morning.
Urdu Mehfil will again like to commend the hard work of the mushaira team, including Janab Perwaiz Jafri, Janab Dr. Nausha Asrar, Janab Ajmal Ansari, Janab Nasir Alam and Janab Irfan Jafri. who, it appears, have perfected themselves in organizing successful mushairas in Houston.
