Malka Pukhraj Ki Yaad Merin

An Evening with Tahira Syed

A Tribute to Late Malka Pukhraj organized by Ghazal Society of Houston

Ghazal Society of Houston was formed in early part of this year, by a group of devotees of geet and Ghazal. It is a non-profit organization and anyone who is fond of 'Geet' and 'Ghazal' can become a member. As yet there is no membership fee.

Ghazal Society of Houston hosted its first elite program on Sept.3,2005 at Marriott Westchase Hotel, designated as ‘Malka Pukhraj Ki Yaad Main’. The singers were her daughter Tahira Syed who had come over from Lahore, and Udaiyan Parrikh of Houston who received tutelage from Mehdi Hassan. A sumptuous dinner , provided by King’s Chicken was served at 7pm. Soon after the dinner the program started with a 30 minutes documentary on life of Malka Pukhraj narrated by herself. The documentary was directed by Khawja Najmul Hassan of PTV. It included three magnificent Ghazal of Ibne Insha
sung by Malka Pukhraj. The Ghazal were: 1. Preet kay jogi sub kuch bujhe, sub kuch janain hain'. 2. ‘Sham-e-judai phir laut aai’. 3. ‘Aiye dil-e-deewana’.

Then Udaiyan Parrikh sung few ghazals of Malka Pukhraj in a great classical style of Mehdi Hassan: ‘Nikhat-e-zulf se meri neendo ko basa dey aa kar’, ‘Aray mai gusaro kahan ja rahye ho saweray saweray’, ‘Kab taheray ga dil, kab raath basar ho gi’.

Tahira Syed in her mellifluous voice sang several geets, ghazals, Pahdi and Punjabi songs which were mostly sung by her mother. There were several new items which she had not sung publicly before.

The musicians were Haji Kamal on keyboard; Azim Khan on guitar and Mr. Happy on tabla. All from Houston, and they gave excellent performance. The program was well attended by the aficionados. The hall was aesthetically decorated with Malka Pukhraj’s portrait on Duratrans at front of the stage.

The Master of the Ceremony was Dr. Ahmed Sayeed. It was a very well organized event that started dead on time and ended by 2am.
